The little settlement of Ikoma, which is close to the Serengeti National Park’s northwestern boundary, is home to a historic colonial-era fort. Germans constructed it, using it as both a garrison and an administrative hub. Since then, it has undergone a few repairs.

The structure is still standing as the beginning of the town and a popular tourist destination today.

History of Fort Ikoma

Fort Ikoma was built by the Germans in 1901, during the colonial period in Tanzania. The fort was strategically located on a hill overlooking the Serengeti plains, providing a clear view of the surrounding area. The fort was used as a military base by the Germans during their occupation of Tanzania, and later by the British during World War I.

After the war, the fort was abandoned and fell into disrepair. However, in the 1970s, the Tanzanian government began restoration efforts to preserve the fort as a historic landmark. Today, the fort serves as a museum, showcasing the history and culture of the region.

I stayed at Fort Ikomo in1972. It was a hotel owned by a British man. It was fascinating. We decorated a Christmas tree inside the Fort!!
Wish you went into more detailed history.
